Current Projects

I’m currently involved in the following research collaborations:

I am an editor of The Tibet Reader, forthcoming from Duke University Press. This book offers historical, cultural, religious, and political insights into Tibet from 1913 to 2013. It presents the transnational, and regional mobility of Tibetan culture, religion, and people into the context of Indigeneity, colonialism, and the modern nation-state. Drawing from multiple disciplines, including anthropology, literature, philosophy, and religious studies, the volume showcases a wider range of Tibetan cultural expression—from religious prayers to modern song lyrics, recipes to fiction, poetry to political art, and op-eds to prophecies—than extant collections.

I am an editor of a special issue of Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies titled “Under/Representation: A Critical Dialogue on the Politics of Identities and Difference Across Central Asia, North Asia, and the Himalayan Region.”

I’m currently in the post-production phase of a documentary titled Faith Outside of Tibet (working title). This film explores Tsewang Kabar’s religious faith outside of Tibet during a day in the West, highlighting her devotion even though her daily religious practices are significantly reduced compared to her contemporaries in Tibet, India, and the Himalayas. This quiet sense of loss forms the emotional core of the film, unfolding through her prayers at her family shrine, before Green Tara, and among sacred objects — interwoven with her personal stories.

Another project broadly studies the relationship between religion and music, with a particular focus on the representation of religion in modern Tibetan music. In collaboration with Dr. Darcie Price-Wallace, we explore themes of religious devotion, materiality, and performance within Tibetan music and beyond.
